After years of using area creeks and gravel pits for swimming holes, area residents in 1921 enjoyed the new swimming pool built by the shareholders of the Gibson City Aquatic Association. The financial hardship of the early 1930’s caused the pool to close. In 1937, Gibson Recreation Inc. purchased the pool mortgage and reopened the pool. When the private citizens found they could no longer keep the pool open, a community fund drive raised almost $10,000, which included a $4,000 gift from McMillan Feed Mills. The City of Gibson agreed to take title with a small tax levied to pay for pool operation and maintenance.
In 1965, the public approved a $66,000 bond referendum to construct a pool addition and add new filtration equipment. Twenty years later, in 1986, a new five-inch pool bottom was poured over the old one. A Build Gibson City Pool committee of private citizens formed in 1914 to raise funds for a new pool. Contributions fell far short of the $3.9 million needed for a new pool.
Earlier this year, the Gibson City Council established the Swimming Pool Exploratory Committee and authorized funding for a feasibility study for a new heated swimming pool.
